Daardoor wordt steenkool langzaam in de ban gedaan (dat kan nog fout gaan: om te kunnen concurrren met de aardgasprijs zijn ook steenkolen spotgoedkoop geworden in de VS). Maar het wordt steeds moeilijker steenkool te gebruiken, ook in de VS. Banken financieren het niet meer, verzekeren is moeilijk en men controleert steeds beter op milieuschade.
Dat moet ook, zoals Deutsche Bank al opmerkte:

Wow, de CO2 uitstoot is dankzij het goedkope aardgas terug op het niveau van 1964 per hoofd van de bevolking. Als de elektrische auto oprukt, kan dit nog verder verbeteren.
Hinderpaal: vooral de winning van olie uit teerzanden, dat is buitengewoon vervuilend.
